Emerging Threats and Implications for Buyers in the Fine Art World

The trend of globalisation sweeping through the fine art world is likely to continue into 2020 and beyond!

DID YOU KNOW… the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction was Leonardo Da Vincci’s Salvator Mundi in 2017. The buyer was none other than Saudi’s Prince Bader bin Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Farhan al-Saud who bought the artwork at a whopping price of $450 million.

This sale has highlighted a trend of globalisation sweeping through the fine art world - causing two matters to arise.

  1. Rising buyers, Rising prices
With more and more people attaining wealth and with the capability to obtain art for aesthetics and asset class, this has pushed art prices to a whole new level. With limited supply of original art pieces from the 1900s, and high demand, this will drive prices up even higher.
  2. Thefts on the Rise
With prices sky rocketing, thieves have sort to obtain art through unscrupulous means! Here is a quick list of 5 paintings that have been stolen throughout the years:
  • Mona Lisa - Leonardo da Vinci (Stolen in 1911)
  • Le Pigeon aux petis pois – Pablo Picasso (Stolen in 2010)
  • Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church in Nuenen - Vincent van Gogh (Stolen in 2002)
  • The Concert - Johannes Vermeer (Stolen in 1990)
  • The Scream – Edvard Munch (Stolen twice! 1994 and 2004)
